Design Code

Use this function to select the design code to apply for the strength verification of steel members and specify the lateral bracing condition of the structure's horizontal members (beams and girders).

From the Main Menu select Design > Steel Design > Design Code.

The following dialog box is used for data entry:

Design Code

Steel design code [Default = AASHTO-LRFD 17] (refer to Note 1)

All Beams/Girders are Laterally Braced

Specify the lateral brace condition to the horizontal members (beams and girders) of the structure to be designed (refer to Note 2).

Apply Special Provisions for Seismic Design

Not available

: Enter the selection and close the dialog box.

: Do not enter the data or the selection and close the dialog box.

Note 1
If the user neglects to enter the design code, the Steel Design Code of the AASHTO-LRFD 17 is applied by default.

The available steel design codes are as follows (Availability of design codes vary with different country versions):

- American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, Section 6 - Steel Structures, 8th edition 2017 (AASHTO-LFRD17)

- American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, Section 6 - Steel Structures, 2016 (AASHTO-LFRD16)

- American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, Section 6 - Steel Structures, 2012 (AASHTO-LFRD12)

- American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, Section 6 - Steel Structures, 2002 (AASHTO-LFRD02)

- American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO-LFD96)

- American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, 1996   (AASHTO-ASD96)

- Load and Resistance Factor Design, the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC-LRFD 2K & 93)

- Allowable Stress Design, the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC-ASD89)

- Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code, 2014 (CSA-S6-14)

- European Standard (EN 1993-2:2005)

- British Standard (BS5950-90)

- Indian Standard, Code of Practice for General Construction in Steel (Second Revision), 1984 (IS:800-1984)

- Indian Road Congress, Standard Specifications and Code of Practice for Road Bridges, Section V, Steel Road Bridges (Limit State Method), (IRC: 24-2010)

- Limit State Design, Taiwanese Bridge Standard, Section 8.3 (TWN-BRG-LSD90)

- Allowable Stress Design, Taiwanese Bridge Standard, Section 8.2 (TWN-BRG-ASD90)

Note 2
When the top compression flanges of the steel girders or beams are connected to the concrete floor by welded metal decks and/or shear connectors, it is assumed that all the members are laterally braced. If this item is selected, the Laterally Unbraced Length (Lb) field is deactivated in the "Unbraced Length (L,Lb)" Dialog Bar and Lb = 0 is applied to all the members.

(Refer to "Unbraced Length (L,Lb)")
