Column Checking

Using the results obtained from the analysis of the entire structure and additional design data, verify the strengths of concrete column members according to the following design codes: AASHTO-LRFD 16, AASHTO-LFD96, CSA-S6-14, EN 1992-2 including UK and Italy national annex, IRC:21-2000, IRC:112-2011, SNiP 2.05.03-84*, SP 35.13330.2011, TWN-BRG-LSD90

Chinese and Korean specifications are available upon request.

From the Main Menu select Design > RC Design > Concrete Code Check > Column Checking.

Shortcut key : [Ctrl]+6

The strength verification results sorted by elements are based on the maximum axial forces, biaxial moments and shear forces, which result in the maximum strength ratios calculated at the positions (I, 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 & J) of each element in accordance with the load combinations for concrete design. The maximum strength ratios with respect to the design strengths are evaluated on the basis of P-M interaction diagrams.

The strength verification results sorted by section properties are based on the results that produce the maximum strength ratios in the P-M diagrams by considering all the elements and locations pertaining to each section in accordance with the load combinations for concrete design.

The results appear in blue when the strength verifications for the given section properties and rebars are satisfactory, otherwise they appear in red, which represent the results are unsatisfactory.

Strength verification can be performed by using the information on the main rebars (diameter, number), sub-rebars (diameter, number) and design parameters entered by the user. Strengths cannot be verified without the rebar data.

The strength verification results are produced in the unit system selected by the user.

LCB: Load combination yielding the maximum factored load ratio determined from the P-M diagram. The program examines all the load combinations and sectional locations of the relevant element or section property to find the maximum ratio.

POS: Section check points

Ast: Area of main reinforcing steel

Rho: Ratio of main reinforcing steel

Pr-max (N_Rd max): Max. axial strength (if Design code is Eurocode2-2:05)

Pu (N_Ed): Factored compression (tension) force acting on the column member under the load combination displayed in LCB (if Design code is Eurocode2-2:05)

= Pu > 0: Compressive axial force acting in the member's axial direction

= Pu < 0: Tensile axial force acting in the member's axial direction

Mc (M_Ed): Magnified factored moment (if Design code is Eurocode2-2:05)

Pr (N_Rd): Nominal axial strength (if Design code is Eurocode2-2:05)

Mr (M_Rd): Nominal moment strength (if Design code is Eurocode2-2:05)

Rat-P: Ratio of the factored axial force (Pu) to the design axial strength (Pn). The ratio larger than 1.0 signifies that the design strength is unsatisfactory even if the rebar quantity is increased to the maximum rebar ratio or the minimum rebar spacing for the relevant column section.

Rat-M: Ratio of the factored bending moment (Mc) to the design bending moment strength (Mn). The ratio larger than 1.0 signifies that the design strength is unsatisfactory even if the rebar quantity is increased to the maximum rebar ratio or the minimum rebar spacing for the relevant column section.

Asvy:The quantity of shear rebars provided by the user for y axis (local) of the column.

Asvz:The quantity of shear rebars provided by the user for z axis (local) of the column.

Vu (V_Ed): Factored shear force in the column member under the load combination displayed in LCB.(if  Design code is Eurocode2-2:05).

Rat-V: Ratio of the factored shear force (Vu) to the design shear strength (Vn). The ratio larger than 1.0 signifies that the design strength is unsatisfactory even if the ties spacing is reduced to the minimum for the relevant column section.

Common Control

: Display the applicable code for strength verification.

"Sorted by Element" displays the checking results including the maximum factored negative and positive moments and shear forces extracted from all the load combinations at 3 sectional locations (I,M, & J).

"Sorted by Property" displays the checking results of the maximum factored negative and positive moments and shear forces by sectional locations representing all the elements attributed to the relevant section property. Since the results do not pertain to a single element, NOEL (element number) is "0".

Once Property is selected, SEL controls all the elements attributed to the same section properties.

: Display the unit system selected by the user.

 : Select all members

: Cancel the selection of all members

Recheck the selected members. When the recheck is executed from the results displayed by section properties all the elements attributed to the same sections are included.

: Display detail strength verification results

: Display simplified strength verification results

: Produce the strength checking results in summary calculations for the selected members.

: Produce the summary list of strength checking results for the selected members.

The maximum forces (results of maximum reinforcing steel) calculated at each sectional location (I,M & J) are produced.

Plot the results and the corresponding P-M interaction diagram applicable for the factored axial force and biaxial moments.

All: Produce all the strength checking results in the Checking Results dialog box.

OK: From the strength checking results, display only the checking results that have met the design requirements (OK) in the Checking Results dialog box.
